Run a repeatable audiobook QC pass for text accuracy, speaker continuity, pronunciation, edits, audio defects, chapters, and final delivery.

Audiobook quality control is a comparison, not a general impression. “It sounds fine” cannot prove that every sentence is present, the right character speaks each line, or the delivery files match the approved master. A reliable QC process defines defect types, records exact locations, verifies repairs, and protects already approved audio from accidental change.

Use at least two gates: editorial QC against the source and technical QC against audio and distributor requirements. The same reviewer can perform both on a small project, but the evidence and pass criteria should remain separate.

Freeze the review package

Before listening, assemble:

  • the approved manuscript or narration script with stable paragraph IDs;
  • the cast and alias map;
  • the approved pronunciation guide;
  • lossless chapter masters and their checksums;
  • the chapter manifest;
  • processing and render version;
  • the defect log template;
  • the target distributor's current specifications.

Do not review files while they are still being regenerated. Freeze a candidate version, label it, and reject any result produced from a different source.

Define defect categories

Use consistent labels so patterns emerge:

  • text accuracy: missing, repeated, added, or changed words;
  • speaker: wrong character, narrator, or alias mapping;
  • pronunciation: wrong term, stress, number, abbreviation, or language;
  • performance: meaning-changing emphasis, inconsistent character, or inappropriate pace;
  • edit: click, clipped phoneme, doubled breath, abrupt ambience, or gap;
  • audio: distortion, hum, noise, level shift, or processing artifact;
  • structure: wrong header, order, chapter boundary, credit, or sample;
  • metadata: title, contributor, filename, or manifest mismatch.

Assign severity from listener impact, not repair difficulty. A quiet click may be minor; one omitted “not” is critical because it reverses meaning.

Proof against the text

Listen while following the approved script. Mark position by section ID and audio timestamp. Do not “correct” a mismatch from memory.

Check short function words carefully. Articles, negatives, names, and numbers are easy to miss and can change facts. Verify repeated phrases that may have been removed by an over-aggressive de-duplication step.

For adapted visual material, compare against the approved audio adaptation, not the visual source alone. Every omission needs an explicit editorial decision.

The dialogue-formatting workflow provides speaker metadata. QC should challenge low-confidence inferences and short reactions where automated attribution often fails.

Check continuity by character and chapter

Linear listening catches story flow. A second, targeted pass catches continuity. Sample the first, middle, and last appearance of each recurring voice. Compare pace, register, energy, and pronunciation.

Use the reference clips saved during character voice casting. A character may legitimately change emotion; the test is whether the identity remains recognizable and the change fits the scene.

Listen across chapter boundaries for room tone, level, narrator timbre, and processing differences. Production sessions that pass individually can sound inconsistent when adjacent.

Verify pronunciations and spoken forms

Search the script for every locked guide entry and sample at least the first occurrence in each new production session. High-risk names and invented terms deserve every-occurrence checks.

Compare against the pronunciation guide, including intentional character variants. Numbers, dates, abbreviations, units, URLs, and equations also need approved spoken forms.

When a decision changes, search every completed chapter. Fixing the reported occurrence alone leaves inconsistency elsewhere.

Listen for edit and audio defects

Use headphones to find clicks, clipped consonants, mouth noise, abrupt gates, and spectral artifacts. Then use ordinary speakers and a phone to test intelligibility. A defect audible only at extreme volume may deserve different severity from one that masks a word on common playback.

Inspect suspicious locations visually, but trust listening for impact. A waveform can look smooth while an edit changes cadence. Automated scanners are useful for clipping, excessive silence, encoding, and level outliers; they cannot approve performance.

Avoid repairing harmless breaths indiscriminately. Removing every breath can make speech unnatural and create more edits than it solves.

Audit chapter structure and delivery

Compare the complete file set to the chapter manifest. Verify opening and closing credits, spoken headers, file order, duration, sample, and checksums.

Run a boundary playlist containing the last thirty seconds and first thirty seconds of adjacent files. This quickly exposes duplicated sentences, missing transitions, and changing noise floors.

For ACX, run the numeric and encoding checks in the submission preflight. Recheck the official platform rules at delivery time.

Write actionable defect tickets

A useful ticket contains:

  • book and candidate version;
  • chapter and stable source ID;
  • audio timestamp;
  • defect category and severity;
  • expected text or behavior;
  • observed result;
  • reference source;
  • repair scope, including repeated occurrences;
  • status, owner, and verification note.

“Sounds weird around ten minutes” wastes repair time. “Chapter 04, 10:14.220, speaker should be Mara; currently narrator; source p0412” is reproducible.

Do not edit the only copy while reviewing. Repairs create a new candidate master and update the manifest.

Verify repairs without causing regressions

After a repair, listen from before the edit through after it. Check word accuracy, timing, ambience, and level. Then rerun any affected technical analysis.

If a voice, model, processing chain, or source paragraph changed, expand the regression scope. A new render can fix pronunciation while altering pace or speaker assignment.

Mark a ticket closed only after independent playback of the produced delivery, not when the editor says the change was made. Preserve the old and new checksums.

Set a release gate

The book is ready when:

  • critical and major editorial defects are closed;
  • every chapter has a completed text-accuracy pass;
  • recurring voices and pronunciations pass continuity checks;
  • technical reports pass current platform rules;
  • credits, headers, file order, and metadata match the manifest;
  • samples derive from the approved current master;
  • all repaired sections passed contextual regression listening;
  • candidate checksums are frozen for upload.

A strong checklist makes quality measurable without pretending every problem is numeric. Freeze the candidate, compare it to authoritative sources, log exact defects, and verify the final delivery. That is the difference between listening to a book and proving which version is ready to publish.
